What should happen to fake email in your name?

DMARC tells other companies what to do if someone pretends to be you, and emails you a report. Answer three questions and copy the DNS record.

DMARC is a second DNS note. After SPF (and DKIM, which your mail host usually sets), it says what to do if someone pretends to be you, and it emails you a report.

1. What is your email domain?

The part after @, same as in the SPF tool.

2. Where should the weekly reports go?

Use an inbox you actually read, on this domain if you can. Reports are technical XML; you do not have to understand every line. They show who is sending as you.

3. What should other companies do with fake mail?

Start by watching. Only get stricter after a couple of weeks of good mail still arriving (newsletters, the website, the office).

4. Copy this into DNS

TypeTXT
Name / Host_dmarc
Value / Content
v=DMARC1; p=none
  1. Publish SPF first if you have not already.
  2. In the same DNS panel, add another TXT record.
  3. The name is _dmarc — not @. Full name looks like _dmarc.yourdomain.com.
  4. Paste the value. Save. Check with the DNS lookup.
  5. Keep “Just watch” until reports look boring. Then come back and pick spam or block.

How it works

Publish SPF first. DMARC then asks for reports and, when you are ready, asks others to junk or refuse fake mail.

  1. Step 1

    Give a report inbox

A mailbox you read. You will get summaries of who sent mail using your domain.

  2. Step 2

    Start by watching

Do not block on day one. Wait until newsletters and office mail still arrive.

  3. Step 3

    Paste a TXT named _dmarc

Not @ — the name is _dmarc. Then look it up.

DMARC FAQ in plain language

Do I need this if I already made SPF?

SPF lists allowed senders. DMARC tells receivers what to do when a message fails, and it sends you a report.

Will “just watch” stop spam?

No. It only reports. That is the point at the start: see who is using your name before you block anyone.

Where do I paste it?

Same DNS panel as SPF, but the host name is _dmarc, not @.

Do you send or store reports?

No. Reports go to the inbox you typed, from other companies’ mail servers.
