Self-Hosted Spam Filter: Rspamd, SpamAssassin, or a Commercial Gateway

Self-hosted spam filtering means you run the scanner. Compare Linux open-source stacks with an on-premise commercial SMTP gateway such as Hexamail Guard.

Hexamail Editorial

Self-hosted is an operations model

Mailcow and Stalwart already include Rspamd or built-in filters. Rolling Postfix + Rspamd + ClamAV is the classic. Self-hosted spam filter as a search often means “not Mimecast,” not “I want to tune Bayes ham/spam folders this weekend.”

If you will not tune it, buy a commercial on-prem gateway or a cloud MX. Hub: on-premise spam filter.

Open source vs Guard

Choose Guard when

The mail server is Exchange or another Windows MTA, staff will not SSH into Rspamd, and bodies must not leave the network. Choose Rspamd when Linux mail is already the job. Both are self-hosted. Only one includes a commercial support path.
