MDaemon Alternative: When Add-Ons Become the Product
Why teams look past MDaemon—ActiveSync, Outlook Connector, per-user bands—and which Windows mail servers actually replace it.
People do not leave MDaemon because it cannot send mail
MDaemon is a capable Windows mail server with WorldClient webmail and a long MSP memory. The search “MDaemon alternative” usually means the add-on invoice: ActiveSync licensed separately (not on Standard), Outlook via Connector, Antivirus as another SKU, user bands from a handful to a couple of thousand.
If those add-ons are already paid and the GUI is muscle memory, staying is rational. This page is for when the commercial shape no longer matches “we just wanted email.”

What to match, and what not to
Match: Windows (or a VM), IMAP/SMTP, webmail, spam, a vendor. Do not require a pixel clone of WorldClient. Require a written list of who needs ActiveSync vs who can use IMAP on iPhone Mail — that list decides whether SmarterMail/Exchange is mandatory or whether Hexamail/MailEnable is enough.
Alternatives by job
Hexamail Server
Per-user perpetual license, first year support in, later years typically ~25%. SMTP/IMAP/POP, webmail, CalDAV, AD/LDAP, on-box antispam options, Windows or Linux. Trial both IMAP in Outlook and the webmail before you compare MAPI claims you may not need.
See also MailEnable and SmarterMail if those were the other tabs in the same RFP.
