MailEnable Alternative: After the Free Edition Runs Out
MailEnable Standard is a real free Windows mail server. Alternatives matter when you need ActiveSync, antivirus, clustering, or a path off Windows.
MailEnable’s actual job
MailEnable is the popular per-server, unlimited mailbox Windows platform. Standard is free. Hosts love it. SMBs love the price until Exchange ActiveSync is billed per mailbox per year and antivirus/HA sit in upper editions.
“MailEnable alternative” is rarely “Standard cannot receive mail.” It is “the edition we need is no longer the free one,” or “we might run Linux next.”
Context: Windows mail server comparison.
Stay vs leave
Stay if unlimited domains on one Windows license is the whole story and IMAP/webmail is enough. Leave if iPhone users were promised Exchange-like sync without an annual EAS line, or if you want AD/LDAP plus on-box spam without climbing editions.
Compared to the usual suspects
Next step
If the pain is mobile sync, price MailEnable EAS against SmarterMail and against “IMAP on Apple Mail + Hexamail webmail.” The last option surprises finance teams. Hub: best Windows mail server.
