Email Archiving for Legal Discovery: Search, Hold, Export

eDiscovery needs a complete capture, a hold that stops deletion, and exports that still look like email. How on-premise archives compare to Microsoft Purview and enterprise suites.

Hexamail Editorial

Discovery fails at capture, not at the UI

If mail was never journaled, no archive will invent it. If users can still purge the only copy, hold is theatre. Legal discovery needs: journal/SMTP completeness, hold or freeze, search that includes attachments, export to EML/PST with headers.

SMB tools (Vault, MailStore) do search and export well. Named Legal Hold is stronger in MailStore’s docs than in Vault’s expiry policies. Enterprise review queues live in Proofpoint/Mimecast/Jatheon. Pick the layer you will actually staff.

Hub: on-premise archiving. GDPR neighbour: GDPR archiving.

Tool vs process

Hexamail Vault

Fast search and audit-style export on your disks. For a litigation hold letter, freeze retention and snapshot the store; if counsel requires a productised Legal Hold switch, include MailStore in the bake-off. Completeness still starts at the journal.
